Motorcyclist 'catapulted' into Brisbane River when bike hit barrier

Police say the bike hit the guard rail with such force that the rider was flung into the water.

A man has died after being "catapulted" into the Brisbane River when the motorbike he was riding hit a concrete barrier on the Riverside Expressway, police have said.

Police said the 31-year-old man from the Gold Coast was riding down Ann Street in Brisbane's CBD when he lost control at the on ramp to the Riverside Expressway.

The bike hit the guard rail with such force that the rider was flung over the handlebars and into the water.

Acting Inspector Steve Watterson said a witness who saw the crash called emergency services, who searched the river.

"For reasons currently under investigation he collided with the concrete barrier and has been catapulted into the Brisbane River," Acting Inspector Watterson said.

"Swift water rescue and Water Police officers retrieved the body of a 31-year-old male from the water."

By the time police reached the man, his body had washed downstream to the Riverside Ferry Terminal.

The on ramp where the man's motorbike lay remained closed for several hours overnight as police investigated the crash.

Police have appealed for anyone with dash-camera footage of the crash or of the motorbike prior to the crash to contact them.
