Motorcyclist and passenger suffer serious injuries following crash on A68 in County Durham

A biker and passenger suffered serious injuries after an early morning crash in County Durham.

Emergency crews attended the scene of the crash on the A68 near Witton-le-Wear on Thursday morning where a car and a motorbike were found to have collided. A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary confirmed that their officers had attended the scene following the crash.

They said: "Officers were called to reports of a road traffic collision on the A68 near Witton-le-Wear just after 7am this morning (March 17). The collision involved a car and a motorbike with the motorbike rider, a man in his 50s, and his passenger, a woman also in her 50s, suffering serious injuries.

"The road was closed to allow paramedics access and both the man and woman have been taken to hospital. The road has now reopened."

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson confirmed that two ambulance crews were at the scene. An air ambulance was also dispatched to the scene from Great North Air Ambulance Service.

An NEAS spokesperson said: "We were called to reports of a road traffic collision on the A68 in Witton-le-wear shortly after 7am this morning. We dispatched two ambulance crews and an officer, and requested support from Great North Air Ambulance Service."

The spokesperson confirmed that two casualties were taken to hospital: "Two patients were taken by road to James Cook Hospital for further treatment." The A68 has since reopened following the crash.
