Motorbike rider rushed to hospital after serious crash on major road

A man was rushed to hospital after a serious crash with a car outside Walton Prison.

Emergency services were called to Hornby Road shortly before 4pm after reports of a collision between two vehicles.

A male motorbike rider was rushed to hospital after the crash as police officers closed the entire road in both directions.

Closures are currently in place from Southport Road to Rice Lane and are expected to remain in place for most of the evening.

Drivers are currently being advised to avoid the area.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "Emergency services are currently in attendance of Hornby Road, Liverpool following reports of a road traffic collision this afternoon involving a car and a motorcycle.

"Officers were called to the scene at around 3.50pm. Here, the male motorcyclist was treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital.

"The extent of his injuries are unknown at this time.

"Hornby Road is currently closed in both directions (Southport Road/Rice Lane), please avoid the area."

Public transport in the area is also affected.

Arriva tweeted: "Service update at 1615 hours, 19 August 2019 - Due to a RTC on Hornby Road service 68 (Aigburth Vale - Bootle Strand) is diverted via Marsh Lane- Stanley Road - Linacre Lane. This is in both directions."

Services from Bootle to Aigburth are also affected.
