Motorbike rider air lifted to hospital after crash on M62 near Leeds

A male motorcycle rider who was air lifted to hospital after a crash on the M62 near Leeds is in a 'critical but stable' condition.

between junction 31 for Castleford and junction 30 for Rothwell.

Reports suggest the motorcycle collided with a lorry and a car although police can only confirm the crash involved a motorcycle and "other vehicles" at this time.

The westbound carriageway was closed soon after the crash and the eastbound side was also shut from 8.50am to allow an air ambulance to land.

The seriously injured man was transported to Leeds General Infirmary by the air ambulance before the eastbound carriageway was reopened at 9.20am.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: "The only reported injury is the man on the motorbike, who is critical but stable.

"The westbound side is still closed for crash investigations to take place."

Highways England have warned that the earliest the carriageway could reopen is 2pm.

Traffic quickly built up beyond junction 32 for the M1 on the westbound side of the motorway.

Drivers reported being sat in standstill traffic for hours.

Highways England have started to turn around trapped traffic.
