Motorbike catches fire in middle of A19 near Shiremoor during busy bank holiday traffic

A motorbike went up in flames in the middle of the A19 during busy bank holiday traffic.

Two fire crews from Tynemouth were called to the motorcycle fire on the A19 north near Shiremoor just before 1.30pm on Monday.

The bike had been left on its side, partially leaning on the grass verge but still in the live lane of traffic.

Cars moved slowly past the flaming bike, which was well alight, with one passenger exclaiming they could feel the heat coming off it.

Footage of the blaze shows large flames and smoke shooting into the air in the moments before the fire brigade arrived.

It is not known what happened to the motorcyclist, but it is not believed that anybody was seriously injured in the incident.

Fire crews from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service were on scene for around 20 minutes before leaving the A19.

The road remained partially blocked between the Silverlink and Holystone roundabouts until the bike was recovered.

Traffic was back to normal on the A19 by around 3pm.
