MotoGP legend Marc Marquez’s brother has surgery after horrifying Barcelona crash

  • MotoGP rider Alex Marquez, 30, sustained a clavicle fracture and a marginal vertebrae fracture near his neck after a terrifying crash at the Barcelona race on Sunday.
  • Marquez underwent successful surgery overnight on his right clavicle, which was stabilised with a plate, and is expected to be discharged from Hospital General de Catalunya on Monday afternoon.
  • The Spanish rider, brother of seven-time MotoGP champion Marc Marquez, reassured fans from his hospital bed via Instagram, stating “Everything's under control” and thanking them for their concern.
  • His crash was one of two serious incidents that led to the Catalan Grand Prix being red-flagged twice, with French rider Johann Zarco also snapping his fibula and damaging knee ligaments in a separate pile-up.
  • Several riders, including 2024 MotoGP champion Jorge Martin, expressed concerns about the safety of the race, criticising the decision to have three restarts as “very dangerous”.
