MotoGP leader Marc Marquez 'could not breathe' after Thailand race crash

MotoGP championship leader Marc Marquez suffered a horror crash in Free Practice One at the Thailand Grand Prix - then bravely got back aboard his machine in time for Free Practice Two.

The 26-year-old lost control of his back at turn six of the Buriram International Circuit with the Spaniard sliding across the track while his vehicle flipped behind him.

The Repsol Honda rider was then taken to hospital to undergo medical checks, but thankfully avoided serious injury.

Marquez swiftly put the accident behind him and was able to head back out onto the track for FP2, setting the sixth fastest time overall.

"It was a nightmare, for around five seconds I couldn't breathe," said the Spanish star who has won five of the last sixth world titles.

Alberto Puig, Marquez's team boss at Repsol Honda, added: "We were lucky, but he is OK.

"Marquez went to the hospital to check everything, they did an MRI and everything looks fine.

"He had some contusions in the back and also in the leg, and also here in the hip a little bit, but nothing to be worried about."

Despite being given the all-clear, it was far from an ideal start to what could be a pivotal race weekend for Marquez as he bids to claim a sixth world crown.

Heading into the event in Thailand, the 26-year-old currently holds a 98-point lead over Andrea Dovizioso with just five rounds remaining.

The Spaniard can become world champion again this weekend as long as he scores two more points than Italian rider Dovizioso in Thailand.

Marquez won his first world title as a 21-year-old in 2013, becoming the youngest champion in the history of MotoGP.

The 26-year-old then defended his title the following year and though he missed out to fellow countryman Jorge Lorenzo in 2015, Marquez has won the last three world crowns.
