The latest series of Moto G phones are no longer the compact chunky looking 5-inch smartphones they used to be. The new crop of Moto G smartphones have a bigger display, flat back panel and look quite different. Named Moto G 4th Gen and Moto G Plus 4th Gen, the new set of phones, look a lot better than their predecessors the Moto G 3rd Gen and the Moto G Turbo. The Moto G4 Plus is available in two variants on Amazon.in at Rs.13,499 (16GB+2GB RAM) and at Rs.14,999 (32GB+3GB RAM). The Moto G4 will be released in June.
The Moto G4 Plus is a major upgrade over last year’s Moto G 3rd Gen and Moto G Turbo. Here’s what to watch for in Moto G4 Plus.
New design but not water-proof
Moto G4 Plus marks a major design improvement of Moto G phones. At 7.9mm and 155g, the new phone is a lot thinner and weighs just the same as its predecessors. In comparison, the Moto G Turbo is 11.5mm thick and weighs 155g. Also, the famous curved back design has been replaced with a flat back panel with a fabric-like texture. One of the key highlights of the previous Moto Gs was their water- and dust-proof exterior. Surprisingly that has been left out too. The new phone is splash-resistant, though.Bigger display
The G4 Plus comes with a 5.5-inch full HD display, which puts it at par with some of the best budget smartphones. Its predecessor not only has a smaller (5-inch) display but also offers a lower (1280x720p) resolution. Though Motorola has used Gorilla Glass 3 to protect it against scratches, we are surprised that it didn’t go for the latest Gorilla Glass 4 which is considered a lot more rugged.
Fingerprint sensor
With the new Moto Gs, Motorola has tried to add all those features to its product portfolio which users look for these days. One of them is fingerprint sensor. Even though the Moto G4 Plus’s fingerprint sensor looks a bit small, it can configure up to 5 fingerprints at a time. The fingerprint sensor has been incorporated within a square shaped metal band which looks like a home button. Interestingly, it is not a home button and serves only as a fingerprint sensor.
Better processor and storage
Motorola has used the latest mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 octa-core processor to drive the new phones. Moto G4 Plus has been clubbed with up to 3GB RAM, which makes it way more powerful than the Moto G Turbo which ran on a two-year-old Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor with 2GB RAM. The Moto G 3rd Gen ran on an even more inferior Snapdragon 410 quad-core processor with 2GB RAM. Even the storage option has been doubled. Now you have a 32GB variant with expandable memory slot.
More battery
One of the qualms that many have with older Moto G phones is their battery size, and subsequently the battery life. The Moto G4 Plus has a bigger 3,000mAh battery which makes it better equipped to handle requirements of a bigger screen. Motorola has retained the turbo charging feature which we saw in Moto G Turbo and other more expensive Moto smartphones. This feature allows users to use their phones for 6 hours with 15 minutes of charging.
Superior Camera
One of the key upgrades in the Moto G4 Plus is the camera. Not only it has a 16-megapixel camera but it also supports laser auto-focus feature which automatically locks focus on an object in less than a second. Also, it comes with a professional mode for better results.
Dual SIM with 4G
The Moto G 3rd Gen was the first 4G-ready Moto G phone in India, but the 4G was available in only one SIM. The other SIM slot supported 2G networks at best. In the Moto G4 Plus, the other SIM slot now supports 3G networks and the first one supports 4G networks.
