Motherwell Women boss calls for side to kick on after derby win over Hamilton Accies

Motherwell Women’s head coach Paul Brownlie has urged his side to keep improving after beating Hamilton Accies 3-0 in the first-ever Lanarkshire derby in the SWPL.

Leanne Crichton opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Lori Gardner doubled the lead with a stunning effort.

Jemma Hughes netted the winner to secure Motherwell’s first win of the SWPL 1 season and leapfrog Accies to move off the bottom of the table.

Brownlie, while acknowledging the importance of a first win in five league games, will keep the squad grounded as he aims for claret and amber improvement.

“It’s just three points as we need to try and build on the win,” he said. “We won’t lose ourselves after one victory.

“There’s areas of the game we can improve on. So we’re going back to the training pitch to do that.

“We need to keep developing this team to help them reach the next level. It’s an ongoing project for us.

“Motherwell are a well-established club but we want to take it to that next level.”

It was the maiden meeting between the two clubs in women's football, and Brownlie believes the game is a good advert for female sport in Lanarkshire.

“It’s great,” he said. “I know Hamilton will be hurting but we know what that feels like.

“With it being the first Lanarkshire derby, I felt it was a good opportunity to highlight that.

"We had a core of 19 players to pick from, which is the first time we have been able to do that this season.”
