Motherwell talking points as they take a point from high-flying Hibs

Taking a point from a Hibs side that, at least until this afternoon, is top of the Premiership, is a decent reward for Motherwell, and they could conceivably have had all three at Easter Road.

Callum Lang forced a brilliant save from Ofir Marciano, and Jordan White had a 'goal' controversially disallowed, but other than that there wasn't too much to shout about during the 0-0 draw.

On the plus-side, the defence looked quite a bit less leaky than it did on Wednesday when Motherwell twice allowed Livingston to level.

There are definite signs of improvement, which seems to come with each passing game, and that means something probably has to give in Saturday's derby crunch against a Hamilton side that is still to register a point.

Are Motherwell creating enough

One of the key things that helped Motherwell into third place and a Europa League qualifier slot was scoring a lot of goals, but this season so far they haven't done that - why?

Is it because they're not creating enough, they're not getting the rub of the green, or is there something missing?

The two goals scored against Livingston are the only strikes that Stephen Robinson have put in the net so far in four games and other than Jordan White's 'goal' (which we'll get to later), there wasn't much to shout about at Easter Road.

Callum Lang had a good effort well saved, and Ricki Lamie put one over the bar from a corner, but I can't recall Marciano being called into any action other than that save from Lang.

It's a cliche, but goals win games, and Motherwell need more of them.

Defending has improved

Stephen O'Donnell strolled through the game at Hibs (Ross MacDonald/SNS Group)

Stephen Robinson said after the game at Easter Road that Motherwell had kept one of the best players in the Premiership quiet in Martin Boyle, and he definitely had a point.

Hibs might not have been firing on all cylinders for whatever reason, but what they did throw at Motherwell, the defence dealt with without too much drama.

They defended much better as a unit and Hibs didn't have much joy against them, and it's no coincidence that Motherwell on Thursday evening secured the services of Scotland internationalist Stephen O'Donnell.

It was O'Donnell's first game in five months or so, but the big defender strolled through it until a touch of what looked like cramp forced him off late on.

He adds composure and experience to the back line and I'm sure Stephen Robinson will be ready to move heaven and earth in January if it means he can keep the former Kilmarnock stopper for a bit longer.

Jordan White really does have no luck

Jordan White has had two goals disallowed in Motherwell's last three games (Ross MacDonald/SNS Group)

Ever hear the one about the striker who bagged two goals in three games, but neither of them counted?

Yes, we're back with Jordan White again and how much he needs a goal.

He blasted the ball into the net in 35 minutes on Saturday, but Sherwin Seedorf was apparently interfering with the goalkeeper's line of vision, so what could have been a vital opening goal wasn't allowed to stand.

The frustration from White, his team-mates and his manager were palpable, and you really had to feel for the lad, who really needs a break!

As I said after Wednesday's 2-2 draw with Livingston, however, at least he is getting himself into positions where he is able to score, and once he gets that monkey off his back, I'm sure White will go on a run.
