Motherwell talking points as 10-men hold on in derby to boost Euro hopes

Motherwell were hoping to bounce back from a midweek Scottish Cup exit by bagging the Lanarkshire Derby bragging rights over Hamilton Accies.

Although neither side could not be separated during Saturday's goalless stalemate, Stephen Robinson is the happier manager this morning after his team held on for a point with 10-men.

Here's a look at the talking points from a Motherwell perspective...

Gillespie stands out again

Mark Gillespie was the key man again for Well as he kept out Accies at crucial stages in the clash.

It would have been a hammer blow to the Steelmen early on, following their gut-wrenching Scottish Cup exit in midweek to St Mirren, if Marios Okgmpoe had scored after four minutes but a parry by the keeper kept the scores level.

The keeper would again frustrate the South Lanarkshire target man just after the break as his low volley almost found the net.

If he is to leave Fir Park in the summer his fine form, emphasised with a derby day clean sheet, will be a big miss.

Long-shot after seeing red

Chris Long will rightly come under fire for his red card.

Long petulantly kicked the ball away for the first after half an hour and his frustrations were clear early on.

It was not surprising that the forward, returning to the line-up after missing the Scottish Cup clash, made a clumsy challenge on David Templeton just minutes later and received his marching orders.

But it was a bizarre sequence after a bright start to the game alongside Tony Watt as a strike partnership.

His dismissal leaves Stephen Robinson with a headache up front with just young Ross Maciver and Watt to pick from against St Mirren on Tuesday as the main target man.

European boost

Ross County did Stephen Robinson and co a major favour downing Aberdeen a Pittodrie.

It added some sheen to a battling overall showing from 10-man Well as they climbed back into third spot and moved a point clear of the Dons, who have played a game more.

However, it marks seven games without a win in all competitions amid a major downturn in form in recent weeks.

Payback against the Buddies on Tuesday is a must to take full advantage of the game in hand and take the initiative in the race for a Europa League place.
