Motherwell talking points after Celtic ensure worst start for 10 years

Motherwell's defeat at Celtic Park yesterday ensured they go into the international break in the unenviable position of being bottom of the table without a win.

They now have two weeks to stew over another disappointing result.

Most fans would have probably expected the outcome given Motherwell's run of five successive defeats at the hands of the Hoops before this latest meeting.

But that doesn't make seeing your team rock bottom - and below Lanarkshire rivals Hamilton - any easier.

Here's a look at some of the talking points as Motherwell's search for an elusive first league win goes on.

Worst start in a decade

After the highs of sealing a European place last term, Motherwell's run in this campaign has ensured they have now made their worst start to a season for 10 years.

In the 2010/11 campaign, the Steelmen picked up just a point from their first six games before going on to beat St Mirren 3-1 in their seventh league outing under Stuart McCall.

That season, they did rally to earn a top six finish and the Fir Park faithful will be praying there is a similar turnaround in fortunes, as Motherwell currently prop up the Scottish Premiership table.

Motherwell have two points from six outings and now need a win over St Johnstone on September 12 to avoid an even worse record than McCall's side.

Poor form runs deeper than this season

Perhaps the international break is coming at a good time for Motherwell; a fortnight to digest where it's gone wrong in the opening games and pour over ways to put it right.

However, the start to the season shouldn't come as too much of a surprise, really, when you look at the year so far as a whole.

Although Motherwell claimed a European spot last season, before the Covid-19 shutdown their form had dipped so much that they only won a single game (a 4-1 victory over Ross County in March) in their final 10 outings in all competitions.

In fact, in 2020, Motherwell's record stands at played 19, lost nine, drawn six and won just four.

And in the league, they've won just one game in their last 14.

Their only win this season is a 5-1 Europa League qualifier victory against 10-man Glentoran, who were very much in the game up until the red card and spurned two big chances at 0-0.

Has securing that Euro spot last season papered over the cracks of a more serious issue?

Or has the influx of new players in the close season just made it tricky for the team to gel?

With games against St Johnstone and Aberdeen to come on their return from the break, Motherwell must turn things around quickly to have any chance of challenging at the right end of the table this season.

Dogged defensive display

One positive Motherwell can take from their trip to Celtic Park was their defensive display for the majority of the game.

Their game plan of sitting deep and hoping to hit Celtic on the counter attack worked to such an extent, the Steelmen created three good first half chances and it took the Hoops 40 minutes to register a shot on target.

It's not often you see that at Parkhead.

Unfortunately for Motherwell, that first shot on target was the game's opening goal.

Yet before that, Bevis Mugabi and Ricki Lamie, in particular, had done their jobs perfectly, limiting the Hoops to efforts from distance and Trevor Carson was a mere spectator.

Of course, if you don't make the most of your chances Celtic have the quality to punish you - and that's exactly what happened.

Motherwell's strikers still can't buy a league goal and they need to find their shooting boots when they return from the break to fire the Fir Park side up the table.

But the way they handled Celtic's threat for most of the first half will encourage Robinson ahead of more winnable tests to come.
