Motherwell star Stephen O'Donnell says Scotland win would cap 'exceptional' progress

Motherwell star Stephen O'Donnell says a win over Israel tonight in the Nations League would cap "an exceptional couple of years" for Scotland.

Stevie Clarke's side go toe-to-toe with old foes Israel knowing a win will see them top Group B2, and almost certainly book one of two World Cup 2022 play-off places in the process.

Scotland have made incredible progress in recent years, moving from League C to B, and they're one win away from the 'A' League.

Defeat to Slovakia on Sunday ended a nine-game unbeaten run, but having qualified for Euro 2020 with a penalty shoot-out win over Serbia last week, O'Donnell is keen to help Scotland get over the line at the Natanya Municipal Stadium.

He said: "It has been a long week, certainly emotionally, for myself and a few of the boys who have managed to churn out two performances in which they all played very well in both.

"It has been hard but we have one last game against Israel that could hopefully get the job done if we get the win, and that would top off an exceptional couple of years since the unbeaten run started.

"To end the way it did with a great performance against Serbia the other day, to get the win and make sure we finish top would be exceptional.

"It would be nice to end on a win.

"Israel's a difficult place to come, and in amongst Covid and the longer flight it's hard, and playing in the heat as well - I'm a bit pale for this heat, I'll be burning, so it's not ideal - but I'll be looking forward to hopefully another big night for Scotland and if we can get the result everyone wants."

Scotland will learn who they will face in next year's traditional qualifying process for the Qatar World Cup when the draw is made in Zurich on December 7, with the first three games scheduled for March, and the play-off slot would provide a welcome back-up.
