Motherwell star Ricki Lamie dreaming of Scottish Cup run after St Johnstone and Livingston's League Cup exploits

Ricki Lamie reckons seeing St Johnstone and Livingston contest the League Cup final should give Motherwell the belief to go on a Scottish Cup run.

The competition returns later this month after the suspension of lower league football in the SPFL was lifted last week.

On Saturday Motherwell comfortably disposed of Lamie's former club and beaten League Cup finalists Livingston with a 3-1 win at Fir Park.

And after seeing Saints lift the trophy at Hampden, defender Lamie reckons Motherwell should be dreaming of doing the same in the country's flagship tournament and breaking up Celtic's dominance in the competition.

Lamie said: "It's inevitable that the Old Firm will be there or thereabouts and it'd be a big scalp for anybody else to take the cup, but I think we need to be confident.

"The boys finished third last year, off the back of that we went into Europe and it would be great to put a run together.

"If the draw is kind to you, you never know where it can take you.

"Next thing you know you are in the latter stages.

"For St Johnstone and Livingston to go and show that if you do those things, it can take you into semi-finals, finals... that's something we'll definitely be looking to do."

The Steelmen moved 10 points clear of bottom side Kilmarnock with their league win over the Lions, but now move into an idle fortnight before heading to Kilmarnock in the league and a trip to either Formartine or Annan in the third round of the Scottish Cup on April 3.

Lamie admits the break has come at an unfortunate time, with Motherwell going three games undefeated for the first time in 15 months, but at least knows it will allow the club time to solve some of their injury problems.

A host of key players including Bevis Mugabi (shoulder), Mark O'Hara (illness) and Sherwin Seedorf (knee) are sidelined, while Declan Gallagher is on the way back to full fitness. Striker Tony Watt also picked up a knock in the win over Livi.

Lamie added: "It's amazing how you have fixture congestion and then suddenly you find yourself on a break.

"It's typical of it to come when we are in a good vein of form, but it's been a hectic schedule and we can't hide the fact we've had bad luck with injuries.

"Hopefully that's a good thing with a fortnight to get the guys that are close, which a couple are, a bit of training in their legs and hopefully get a bounce game or two to get guys back in contention."
