Motherwell star open to extended Fir Park stay as he details contract situation

Bevis Mugabi is a fans’ favourite at Fir Park - and he views Motherwell as a place to potentially settle down.

The centre-back joined the club under Stephen Robinson in 2019 and he’s been a consistent performer since Graham Alexander took charge in January this year.

Mugabi has also worked his way into the Ugandan national team, featuring twice for The Cranes over the international break.

His contract is up at the end of the season and Mugabi is open to discussing a new deal with the Premiership side. He has featured both in his natural centre-back position and right-back for Alexander’s side this term.

“I’m under contract until next summer,” said Mugabi. “It’s a place I could see myself settling down for sure. The fans have welcomed me and since the manager came in, I’ve been playing consistently as well.

“I feel I have been playing well for him. So all I can do is focus on my performances and if they want to keep me, I’m here. Hopefully things are going to work out in the near future.

“I feel like the club does an amazing job of including the community and being supportive of the environment around us.

“With my previous club Yeovil, I feel it was similar to Motherwell. It was a family club, they tried to include the community in things. It’s important, I feel, to have everything connected and everyone pushing in the same direction.

“I love Motherwell. I love the club, I love the people here. I get along with everybody here to be honest. It would be a good place to settle down for sure.”

Mugabi has made 12 Premiership appearances so far this season, coming off a 2020/21 season disrupted by a shoulder problem that was eventually fixed over the summer.

He was thrown into the league’s first game of the season against Hibs and the 26-year-old hasn’t looked back since.

Motherwell face Hearts this weekend as Premiership football returns, the Steelmen fifth in the table after a 2-0 win over Aberdeen. Mugabi is one of the senior heads in the dressing room, and it’s a role he is thriving in. The Ugandan international thinks it’s been a positive campaign so far.

“For me, it’s going well,” added the defender. “It’s a young squad. I feel I’ve had enough experience to be one of the more experienced guys in the changing room.

“That’s either because I try to lead by example or it’s because of the way I train, and eventually performing on a Saturday. 30 is creeping up on me but I’m not there yet!

“I think the season is going well. I missed the majority of pre-season with the shoulder injury I had at the end of last season. I am just glad it is over with and I can move on from it.

“But I was thrown in on the first day of the season. That was good, to just be thrown into the deep end of playing games again.”
