Motherwell star Liam Donnelly facing spell on sidelines with knee injury

Motherwell midfielder Liam Donnelly is facing at least two months on the sidelines after picking up a knee injury.

Donnelly will visit a specialist today to discover the extent of the problem, and Robinson admits it will be difficult to find a short-term replacement for a star who can play in a number of positions.

"It's not good, we have been told Liam could be out for a minimum of two months," said Robinson.

"The 'curse of the left-back' continues, and we only played him there for 20 minutes in training!

"That gives me a problem, we have injury problems at the back. Ricki Lamie played there and played well, but it was his first competitive game in a long, long time, so we're actively looking to try and get somebody in.

"What's available at this time of the season is virtually nothing, in terms of really good quality.

"England aren't playing, people haven't played since March in the lower leagues, so I need somebody who can hit the ground running, until Nathan McGinley or Jake Carroll are fit, and with a minimal amount of money to spend.

"That reduces it to a needle in a haystack, really."

Robinson added: "Charles Dunne will be out longer, we're hoping Jake will be back at the start or middle of October, and Nathan will be after the international break.

"It's a short-term problem that we can cope with if everyone stays fit, but if we get another injury it's something that could cause me a problem. We haven't got any of the younger boys ready to go at this moment in time into those positions, but we can shuffle things about.

"Liam Donnelly was our versatile one, he could play left-back, centre-mid or right-back or centre-half, so losing him is a big blow.

"He will go to a specialist today and get a proper diagnosis. We're not sure if it will need surgery at this moment in time, but it will be a minimum of eight weeks, probably a little bit longer."
