Motherwell star Jake Carroll hoping to help Steelmen's recovery on injury return

Jake Carroll says he's desperate to help Motherwell turn their fortunes around after 10 months out injured.

The left-back Carroll admits it’s been tough to see his side struggle from the sidelines while he recovered from an Achilles problem and made his return to the starting line-up in Saturday's 3-0 derby defeat to Hamilton Accies.

Motherwell are on a run of 10 games without a win as they search for a new manager, but now he is back fit, Carroll is determined to improve and do his bit to turn their slump around.

He said: “It’s been frustrating because we haven’t been doing great of late.

”I’ve been desperate to get in and try and help the boys so I just want to kick on now, get some games and wins under my belt for the team.

”We are creating half-chances and we are good in possession, but we aren’t switched on at the back.

“We conceded three sloppy goals against Hamilton.

”I think we can score goals no problem – I think the strikers have linked up well at times – but we need to be stronger at the back.

“That’s the priority for me as a defender.

“We have to cancel these moments out.”

Caretaker boss Keith Lasley has the reins as it stands, but the Steelmen are set to appoint a new gaffer imminently.

Lasley, Tommy Wright and Graham Alexander are among those to have been interviewed for the job.

The display against Accies dented Lasley’s bid for the hot-seat and, having not won since a 2-0 victory against Livingston in October, Carroll says 'Well need to change the record in Paisley.

He said: “We know that we have to start winning games.

“You don’t lose games all the time, there’s a time when you start winning and we need to make sure that is in the next game at St Mirren.

“We need to be stronger at the back and we need to score a few goals to get a result.

“The Hamilton result is devastating really because it was a big game for us.

“That game has changed our season before and we know how much it means to the fans.

“With Las taking care of us we really wanted to win for him, so it’s just really disappointing.

“We’ve lost a good man [in Stephen Robinson] and Las is a good man as well, but we needed to do more for him.”
