Motherwell star holds hands up to mistake as he admits team 'got him out of jail' in St Mirren clash

Liam Kelly is used to getting his team out of jail but he reckons his Motherwell team-mates repaid the favour in a thrilling win over St Mirren.

The Fir Park No.1 has had a string of stellar displays and world-class wonder saves this term that have earned him international recognition.

But by his own admission, the Scotland call-up let one slip in a thrilling 4-2 win over St Mirren.

After an early goal flurry that saw Eamonn Brophy open the scoring for Saints before two goals in a minute from Sean Goss and Connor Shields turned the game in Motherwell's favour, Kelly got caught by the flight of the ball from a Jordan Jones corner in the 38th minute.

That allowed Conor McCarthy to stab the ball home for Saints to make it 2-2, amid claims for a foul on the shot-stopper by Brophy.

Thankfully for Kelly, the Steelmen rallied and notched their first win of 2022 with a Dean Cornelius strike on the stroke of half-time and a Richard Tait own goal late in the second half.

And Kelly, whose side ended a run of 11 league games without a Premiership win to land their first triumph of 2022, said: "It's nice my mistake doesn't matter. Usually I make saves, so it's nice when I made a mistake the boys helped me out.

"I've seen it [the Brophy incident] back and it's not a foul.

"It's good striker play from Brophy, but it's not a foul.

"If the other goalie had won that foul, I'd have said he got lucky.

"It's not a foul. I should be stronger, but I'm going to make mistakes myself. I'm still trying to learn, still trying to get better.

"I think we played really well for large parts of the game.

"Maybe 25 minutes of the second half they were on top a wee bit, but the onus was on them to score and get back in the game so I'm pleased."

It was Motherwell's first league win since a Boxing Day triumph over Livingston and they now travel to eighth-place Lions on Saturday in the final pre-split round of fixtures, knowing a win will guarantee them a top six spot.

They currently sit fifth and two points off fourth place Dundee United but, in an incredibly tight table, just three points separate them from 10th place St Mirren.

And ex Livi lion Kelly, who spent three years at the club, said: "I'm just delighted that we won this game and it sets us up for a grand finale last week.

"I've been there [at Livi] so I know how hard it is to go there. Nobody needs to tell me.

"It's going to be really difficult.

"Davie [Martindale, the Livi boss] was there when I was there. He sets his teams up brilliantly.

"They are punching well above their weight again.

"I think both games we've had have been 2-1 so it is going to be really close."

On ending the winless run, he added: "I think if you watch our recent games we've not played brilliantly at times, but it's not as if other teams have been better than us - that's probably why the league is so tight.

"It's not as if we've been outplayed and teams have been battering us.

"Teams have scored early and sat in, then we've got sucker punched at the end.

"That's not making excuses - we could be a lot better, we know that.

"But I saw this coming and with the law of averages you are going to win at some point."
