Chris Long invoked the wrath of manager Stephen Robinson for his derby day red card - but now fans think they have worked out what happened.
The forward was sent off n the first half of the goalless draw against Hamilton Accies for back-to-back yellow cards.
Long was booked first for dissent and then seven minutes later for a clumsy tackle on Accies man David Templeton, as his frustrations got the better of him.
However, after the red card he has his 25th birthday night off as he misses the St Mirren game tongiht.
The Steelmen support have taken to social media have a laugh about the red after Motherwell sent out a happy birthday message.
A fan joked on Twitter: "Ah, now Saturday all makes sense."
One fan responded to the celebratory post on Facebook: "Neymar gets suspended to attend Rio Carnival. Chris Long does it for his birthday!"
A fan also chimed in: "No one likes working their birthday, but most don’t put that much effort into getting the day off."
Another added cheekily: "Red birthday card in the post Chris!"
