Motherwell star Allan Campbell desperate to add more goals and take club to cup glory

Allan Campbell admits his outstanding late goal at Formartine United had been a long time coming and he's desperate to add more - hopefully on the way to silverware this season.

The Motherwell midfielder finished off a wonderful team move involving Chris Long and Jake Hastie, nutmegging a defender and finding the bottom corner with his strike, to complete a 5-0 win in the Scottish Cup on Saturday.

The 76th minute effort was Campbell's fifth goal of the season and kicked off the 30th anniversary season of 'Well's famous 1991 triumph in the competition.

He told Lanarkshire Live Sport: "It was good, I'd been wanting to score all game.

"One thing I'm trying to add to my game is more goals and I played a one-two with Jake and when I got my chance to get the shot away I just wanted to keep it on target, and thankfully it went in.

"I'm just glad that I could contribute to the result.

"Going into the game the boys knew we had to put in a mature performance, make sure we got the job done and get into the next round because we know these games can be hard."

Campbell helped seal Motherwell's progression to the fourth round as they target their first trophy since that epic 4-3 win over Dundee United in extra-time three decades ago.

They now know Greenock Morton stand in their way of reaching this year's quarter-finals, where they will face either Stranraer or Queen of the South/Hibs, following yesterday's draw.

But Campbell insists the significance of the anniversary year has no bearing on their determination to succeed in this season's competition.

The 22-year-old added: "Any chance you go into a competition you want to try and win it.

"That's no different this year.

"It's a competition we want to thrive in, try and get us far as we can and go on to win it.

"It's in our mentality that any competition we go into we want to do our best in."
