Motherwell skipper Stephen O'Donnell's 'defensive lapse' pinpointed in Sportscene analysis

Sportscene pundit Chris Iwelumo believes a lapse in concentration from Motherwell skipper Stephen O'Donnell played a part in them conceding in the first half of their defeat at Dundee United.

The Steelmen fell behind after 35 minutes at Tannadice when Ryan Edwards stole a yard on O'Donnell at the back post to head home Charlie Mulgrew's fantastic delivery.

Motherwell hit back with a Tony Watt penalty before Mulgrew won it for United 13 minutes from time.

But ex-Scotland striker Iwelumo reckons O'Donnell could have prevented the opening goal.

Assessing the action on BBC's Sportscene highlights last night, he said: "It is a fantastic ball in [from Mulgrew], but it can be nullified by O'Donnell opening his shoulders up and making sure he knows where Edwards is.

"He's playing catch-up there as soon as he turns his back on Edwards.

"The ball itself was excellent, but it can be defended better and that's the thing Graham Alexander [the Motherwell manager] touched on.

"It was a very even game, but it was lapses in concentration that they conceded from."

Meanwhile, Iwelumo backed referee Kevin Clancy's decision to award the Steelmen a second half penalty when Benjamin Siegrist clattered into Tony Watt trying to punch the ball clear.

He added: "What I will say is he [Siegrist] is committed to it. If he makes contact with the ball, it's not a penalty but he doesn't.

"He made his decision early, Tony Watt gets to the ball first and when he doesn't make contact, it is 100 per cent a penalty.

"It's basically the back of his arm that's taken Tony Watt out."
