Motherwell signing Sean Goss will be one of best passers in Premiership says Graham Alexander

Graham Alexander reckons new signing Sean Goss has the ability to pass Premiership opposition off the park.

Now he wants to add a bit of Motherwell steel to the former Rangers and St Johnstone playmaker to turn him into the complete midfielder.

Well boss Alexander ’s ambitions for the Englishman are so high he predicts he will be “one of the best passers” in the top flight this season.

But despite coming through the ranks at Manchester United and being renowned for his wicked set piece delivery which was honed with the help of Paul Scholes, Goss is still looking to make his mark at the top level.

Loan spells at Ibrox and McDiarmid Park flattered to deceive before the 25-year-old spent the last two years with Shrewsbury Town.

Now Alexander is confident he can provide the platform for Goss who has signed a two-year deal at Fir Park and could straight into the side against Dundee this afternoon.

Alexander said: I’ve known about him for a whole, he's had spells up here but I knew when he left Shrewsbury last season I wanted to try and get him in.

“Technically he's quality, his left foot is brilliant, he's a good size, good athlete but there's things he needs to improve on to take his career to the next level, and we want to help him do that.

“If your career isn't where your talent says it should be, there's something missing from your game.

“Football's aggressive and maybe he's relied just on his natural talent on the ball.

“He wanted to come here because he feels we can help him with that side and becoming an all-round midfield player.

“I genuinely think he'll be one of the best passers in this division.

“Whether we'll be able to improve that side I doubt because he's already at a really high level.

“But at Motherwell we bring in players who have qualities but there are other parts of their game we need to try and improve. That's the scenario with Sean.

“You're not average if you've been at Man U and Rangers.

“Both his short game and long game is really good but set pieces are such a massive part of the game if you have a good delivery then it can win you games.

“It got us back in the game last week and lost us the game the week before. That’s how important they are.

“Sean’s general quality in open play is what we’ve brought him in for but anyone who can take good set pieces is a bonus.”

Well are looking to make it back-to-back wins after last week’s 2-1 victory at Livingston against a Dee side who turfed them out of the Premier Sports Cup a fortnight ago.

Stephen O’Donnell is still a doubt as he recovers from the effects of a virus that kept him out of the last two games.

Striker Kevin Van Veen could start after shaking off a back niggle that saw him miss out against Livingston and Liam Donnelly and Barry Maguire are both back training.

Should O’Donnell miss out, goalkeeper Liam Kelly will continue as skipper just days after being recalled to the Scotland squad.

And Alexander said: “Liam is delighted. He is always in a good frame of mind here. He’s deserved this call-up and it’s on merit.

“The park is in great condition and we are delighted the supporters are back with us. The response when we were 1-0 down last week was brilliant.

“They certainly played their part in us coming from behind. The players have done that several times in the last few months and having the crowd back with us helps.”
