Motherwell sign Irish defender on loan as they build squad for this season

Motherwell have signed Republic of Ireland defender Eddie Nolan on loan from Crewe Alexandria until the end of this season.

The 32-year-old stopper is the Fir Park club's sixth new signing of the January window, following Jordan Roberts, Sam Foley, Harry Smith, Steven Lawless and Liam Kelly, while Robbie Crawford and Charles Dunne have extended their deals.

Nolan started his career in the English Premier League with Blackburn Rovers and was loaned out to Stockport County, Hartlepool United and Preston North End.

A permanent move to Preston led to further loan spells at Sheffield Wednesday and Scunthorpe United followed, leading to a move to The Iron.

Motherwell boss Graham Alexander told the club's website: "Eddie is a vastly experienced defender and we’re glad to have him.

"I’ve faced him many times with my previous teams and know what he will bring.

"He can slot in anywhere across the back four, giving us good competition across all the defensive line."

Nolan has had recent spells at York City, Blackpool and Crewe.
