Motherwell set to host Hamilton in Lanarkshire Derby this weekend

Motherwell and Hamilton are set to meet in a Lanarkshire Derby this weekend as they step up their preparations for the Scottish Premiership season.

The sides are scheduled to play a bounce game at Fir Park on Saturday in a rare non-competitive meeting between the sides. Their last friendly outing came in July 2003 at New Douglas Park in a 1-1 draw.

The Covid-19 crisis has forced the majority of clubs to stay at home for their pre-season preparations and Premiership clubs have already played amongst themselves to get game time in ahead of the opening weekend on August 1.

The Steelmen lost 4-0 to Rangers last night in a friendly at Ibrox - which was delayed by two hours due to late Covid test results - and also faced Kilmarnock last week, while Accies have taken on Rangers, St Mirren and Hibernian so far.

Motherwell are also set to face Celtic on Sunday and are lining up another clash with Rangers for next week.

Hamilton and Motherwell are awaiting official confirmation that Saturday's game will go ahead.

But Accies chairman Allan Maitland told Lanarkshire Live Sport: "We're due to play Motherwell on Saturday at Fir Park.

"I can't remember the last time we played each other in a game like this, but we are looking forward to it and it will be a good test.

"It will be a strange one, but it's like the rest of the games we've had against Hibs, Rangers and St Mirren, they are all about preparation for both clubs.

"You can't read too much into anything at this stage of the season.

"It's just about getting match time into the legs of the players.

"If you win 5-0 or lose 5-0 it genuinely doesn't make much difference at this stage. It will matter once you get into August, September, October."
