Motherwell Scottish Cup hero Chris McCart's pride as son Jamie wins trophy with St Johnstone

Chris McCart became part of Motherwell history in 1991 when he helped them to win the Scottish Cup, and watched with pride as son Jamie achieved a similar feat with St Johnstone on Saturday.

McCart senior, who has been a coach at Celtic since 2008, was part of the now-legendary 91 side that beat Dundee United 4-3 in an epic final, while his son Jamie's St Johnstone team beat Hibs 1-0 at the weekend.

There can't be too many father-and-son duos who both have a Scottish Cup medal to their name, and Chris was delighted to see his boy reach his own 'hero' status with the Perth club.

Chris said: "It has been an incredible season for St Johnstone.

"With Motherwell winning it 30 years ago and Jamie winning on Saturday, the connection is there.

"It's a special tournament, and they've had a really special season, St Johnstone, with them winning the Betfred Cup, now the Scottish Cup, and getting into the Premiership top six and qualifying for Europe with a fifth position.

"We're very proud of him and proud of his achievements.

"I'm not sure if there are many father-and-son combos who each have a Scottish Cup medal!

"We're absolutely thrilled for Jamie, we know how much he puts into the game, and the dedication of his teammates as well, what they've been through this season.

"The father-and-son thing, I'm not sure if that has been done many times, but it's a fantastic achievement."

Due to Covid restrictions and Hampden's use as a Euro 2020 venue, Chris and the family weren't able to see Jamie's moment of glory, but Chris actually reckons that worked in their favour!

He explained: "I actually found that quite good, because it was nerve-wracking watching it on TV, so I don't know what it would have been like to have been there!

"It goes back to when my own parents, family and my wife were at the game 30 years ago, so I went through every emotion on the day on Saturday, like they did all that time ago.

"The team I was involved in, in 1991, there were some incredible individuals there and to play with a special player like Davie Cooper, on that left side of Tom Boyd, Phil O'Donnell and Cooper was incredible.

"We had some really good players in that side, and that was the final in itself that is regarded as one of the best.

"The excitement and that rollercoaster of the score-line throughout the 90 minutes, extra-time, the drama of the injury to Ally Maxwell, and for Hampden to be packed probably two-thirds by Motherwell fans - there were well over 30,000 that day - was incredible.

"The open-top bus the next day, money can't buy those memories there, that's one thing that will always live with us."

Chris has been coaching at Celtic since 2008, having spent 21 years at Motherwell, 14 as a player and seven as a coach, and has thoroughly enjoyed it.

He said: "It's about development and there's a wee bit more long-term about it.

"I gave up playing at Falkirk at the age of 31, I was offered by Eric Black and George Adams to go into Celtic as the full-time youth coach, and since 1999 I've been working in youth football.

"I had seven years back in charge of the youth academy at Motherwell, and working with some great managers in Eric Black, Terry Butcher, Maurice Malpas and Mark McGhee.

"It was an incredible experience, they're fantastic people and I really enjoyed that, and I flipped between Celtic and Motherwell, and back to Celtic again.

"I've been very fortunate both on and off the pitch."
