Motherwell's Tommy McGuire celebrating great success with new single 'Smile'

Motherwell musician Tommy can’t stop grinning thanks to his new single ‘Smile’.

Tommy McGuire, 24, released the track on October 30 and it has already been a huge success.

He started busking at 16 and since then has played in pubs and venues across central Scotland.

Tommy always dreamed of becoming a singer/songwriter and with the music industry currently at a standstill due to the global pandemic, he decided to focus on writing and getting his own songs produced.

He said: “My single “Smile” is about optimism and being resilient within yourself when dealing with problems. There’s always a way to think positively about things and smiling can be the first step towards that thought.”

This is Tommy’s second single, having released ‘Baby Don’t Worry’ in 2017.

He admits that song didn’t do as well as he hoped, but with the money earned from it he was able to pay for the distribution of ‘Smile’,

He said: “It almost felt perfect that I was able to use the money for my first song to help get my newest one out.

“Smile has had such great success. The support has been amazing and I cannot thank people enough. The whole community seems to have rallied behind me and it can feel quite overwhelming.

“The first weekend it peaked in the top 20 on the Apple Music charts and number 14 on the Apple Music Pop charts. It was also the BBC Introducing Scotland song of the week and has had radio play on too. It’s just been mental.”

Tommy’s inspirations include Paolo Nutini and Gerry Cinnamon and he hopes to follow in their footsteps with his career.

He said: “I’m a massive fan of Paolo, Bruce Springsteen, Chris Stapleton, Stevie Wonder and Motown and Soul music. I’ve been gigging all over the UK for a few years, sharing a bill with such names as Kyle Falconer, Jake Bugg and Gerry Cinnamon.”

You can find Tommy on social media by searching Tommy McGuire, and can listen to ‘Smile’ on all streaming platforms.
