Motherwell's Stephen Robinson in contention to replace Eddie Howe at relegated Bournemouth

Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson has emerged as a potential candidate to succeed Eddie Howe at English Championship club Bournemouth.

Howe parted company with the Cherries at the weekend and according to PA the former Northern Ireland midfielder Robinson in the running for the vacant post.

Bournemouth were relegated to the Championship on the final day of the season and are eager to appoint their new man ahead of the new season on September 12.

Jason Tindall, currently caretaker manager at the club, is odds on favourite for the post, but if they opt to look externally, Robinson will be in the frame.

The 45-year-old, who recently interviewed for the Northern Ireland job, enjoyed a six year spell at Bournemouth as a player where he made 288 appearances in the 1990s.

He was team mates with several current staff members during his time at Dean Court, including Tindall and technical director Richard Hughes.

Robinson has impressed on a modest budget at Fir Park and led Motherwell to a third place finish and Europa League qualification in the SPFL last season.

He was a leading candidate for the Northern Ireland job in June, but eventually lost out to Ian Baraclough who was confirmed as Michael O'Neill's successor.

Motherwell, who kick off the new campaign against Ross County on Monday night, have won 66 of their 146 games with Robinson at the helm.

The Cherries are looking for a new manager after Howe left by mutual consent on Saturday following two spells spanning more than a decade.
