Motherwell's stand against racism was led by Devante Cole, says Declan Gallagher

Declan Gallagher revealed that Motherwell teammate Devante Cole inspired the decision to stand against racism, rather than take a knee, against Kilmarnock.

The Steelmen released a statement on Saturday explaining their decision to stand in solidarity was because taking a knee had become 'an empty gesture' and they wanted 'those in power to take real and immediate action on racism."

Motherwell boss Graham Alexander insisted the decision was made, as a club, before the incident involving Rangers' Glen Kamara and the decision to stand was initiated by Cole according to 'Well captain Gallagher.

"Devante Cole came up to me and said that a few of the boys wanted to take a stand," Gallagher, said. "I believed that if they wanted to take a stand then we had to take a stand together.

"I don't think it's fair if some people take a knee and some people stand. I think we have to show a solidarity and a togetherness.

"I believed that what he said was right. I spoke to the manager, I spoke to Alan Burrows and they agreed that if that's the feeling of the boys then that's what we should do it.

"We had a wee discussion as a team and the boys were happy to do that. Hopefully it shows the awareness and that it sends a message."

The 30 year-old insisted that striker Cole is enjoying his time at Fir Park. Although Gallagher is unware if the Englishman has suffered any racial abuse, he believes it's a subject that angers all of society.

Gallagher added: "I think he's loving his time in Scotland, he's scoring goals and he's playing football. I don't really think that he's went through any of this but to see what's happened to Glen, it's not nice.

"It's not just players like Devante Cole it affects, it affects everyone and it's not good enough. As a team, we were happy to stand by everybody and we want to show that to the world.

Before Sunday's Old Firm clash, Celtic captain Scott Brown walked across to Kamara to display unity and Gallagher praised his actions.

He said: "We've got the stage to show to the world that racism just isn't a good thing - hatred in itself in football isn't a good thing.

"You look at the Old Firm fans and you can see a wee bit of hatred creeping in.

"But Scott Brown walking across the park and show that support to Glen Kamara shows that, rivalry aside, this is football and there is no place for racism in it."

Scotland will also take a stand, rather than a knee, against racism in their World Cup qualifier against Austria and Gallagher believes it's important for footballers to use their platform to support the fight against racism.

He said "As footballers, we've got that world stage where we can show that and set that example. I think that's what we are trying to do on Thursday night by standing.

"We're showing again that we will stick together and not tolerate such things happening like what happened to Kamara. There's no place for it in football and it has to change."
