Motherwell's 'Dani Alves' enjoying position swap with Fir Park squad aiming for upwards Premiership push

He's swapped centre-back for right-back - and Bevis Mugabi already has some comparing him to a Barcelona legend in the Motherwell changing room.

The Ugandan centre-back was impressive against Dundee United during a 1-0 Premiership win on Tuesday.

He kept club captain Stephen O'Donnell out Graham Alexander's 'Well XI throughout November and he has played six of his 16 matches this term at right-back.

Barcelona legend and recent Nou Camp recruit Alves is regarded as one of the best right-back's in football history, and Mugabi is liking comparisons to the Brazilian. He hopes it keeps him in the Fir Park team.

Mugabi said: "My Dani Alves impression is getting a lot better! I'm trying, I really am. All the boys keep calling me Dani Alves! But I'm glad I can do a job there as well as centre-back.

"You can definitely tell the difference between playing the two positions but I'm used to doing both now. I've started a few games as a right-back so I'm just glad I can do a good job in both areas.

"Long may my form continue as if I keep up my performances, I don't see why I shouldn't be in that starting XI."

Motherwell's 1-0 win over United moved them one point outside the Premiership's top four, sitting in fifth place. Torrential rain made for a difficult occasion.

Mugabi explained: "It was so heavy on the legs but we dug deep and got the job done. The weather made it very, very interesting.

"The ball kept getting stuck and bouncing everywhere. You really didn't know where it was going to end up going. But all the boys managed it really well.

"We got through the rest of the game professionally."

Alexander's side came into the match with Dundee United off the back of a humbling 3-0 loss to Dundee last Saturday. But Mugabi says the Steelmen showed character to respond straight away.

The defender said: "It's a very, very good win for us. It's much-needed as well after Saturday's performance up at Dundee. Everyone was able to see we were working hard for each other.

"We put in a big shift. We 100 per cent deserved the three points from this game. I said after the game on Saturday that we just had to get it out the system as Tuesday would come round very quick

"You can see that in this performance, everyone was fighting for each other. I feel we should be looking up rather than down. We're in a good position, so let's see where it takes us."
