Police are appealing for information after a war memorial in a North Lanarkshire park was vandalised.
Shocking graffiti was daubed on the monument in Duchess of Hamilton Park, Motherwell between Saturday June 8 and Monday June 10 of this week.
Pictures show the word 'Rats', 'Scum of the earth' and 'cowards' scrawled above the names of the dead.
North Lanarkshire Council urged residents with information to come forward, adding: "We're very sad to learn that the war memorial at Duchess of Hamilton Park in Motherwell has been vandalised. This disrespectful act can't be tolerated."
The images triggered an outpour of furious comments from locals.
Teresa Huntington said: "Their lack of morals and respect beggars belief. Someone's father, son, brother or uncle died to allow them to desecrate these graves – because that is what they are."
Colin Condie added: "This memorial is dedicated to all military persons who paid the ultimate sacrifice."
Leanne Watkins wrote: "They've no idea the sacrifices these people made just so they could be free today and this is how they repay them."
Those with information that could assist call 101 or CRIMESTOPPERS 0800555111, referencing incident number PS-20190610-1914. Police Scotland have been reached for further comment.
The incident comes four months after an under-construction war memorial was defaced in Dennistoun's Alexandra Park.
Pictures showed the monument scorched and surrounded by debris as a local community page claimed it had been "petrol-bombed."
A cenotaph in Loganloan, Coatbridge was also vandalised in November last year.
