Motherwell pay tribute to 'magical' Ancell Babes hero Willie Hunter

Motherwell have paid tribute to former 'Ancell Babes' icon Willie Hunter, who passed away aged 80.

He became a firm favourite on Lanarkshire turning out over 200 times in the claret and amber under boss Bobby Ancell in the mid 1950s and early 1960s.

As part of a new youth recruitment policy implemented by the gaffer, Hunter would join from Edinburgh Norton and secure his place in Fir Park folklore.

His standout showings for the Steelmen would earn him three Scotland caps.

After bringing the curtain down on his playing career, Willie would become and author writing a book about a trek his wife had taken.

The Motherwell magician also became an ambassador for Football Memories, The charity that seeks to help those with dementia with sporting memoribillia.

A statement from Motherwell read: "Willie had a brilliant football career in what was undoubtedly a tough school. His generous gifts to the game gave him little financial rewards, yet he continued to give to the game and his colleagues afterwards.

"He was a man of substance and opinions, who was the subject of much praise from those who played with, against, or indeed, watched him.

"This magical footballer was perhaps the most complete ever to pull our famous colours over his head, and is someone this club is proud to have played a large part in his life."
