Motherwell on verge of European spot as UEFA reveal guidelines to end Premiership season

UEFA have revealed the goals that need to be hit for the top flight season to be halted in Scotland by the SFA and SPFL.

Motherwell had been left in limbo as they await news from the European chiefs that would mean the Premiership season was completed and and allow them to receive a Europa League spot.

The European adventure for Stephen Robinson's third placed side looks to be a step closed as UEFA confirmed that financial issues facing clubs or Scottish Government reason could bring the curtain down on the season.

The statement said, following "representations made by the football authorities in Belgium and Scotland" UEFA approved "the guidelines on eligibility principles for 2020/21 UEFA club competitions" that "is always based on sporting merit."

The called for domestic leagues "to explore all possible options to play all top domestic competitions giving access to UEFA club competitions to their natural conclusion" but added "UEFA stresses that the health of players, spectators and all those involved in football as well as the public at large must remain the primary concern at this time."

The "ideal scenario" for the European ruling body "is to have the currently suspended domestic competitions completed enabling football clubs to qualify for UEFA club competitions on sporting merit in their original format."

They add: "Should this outcome not be possible, in particular due to calendar issues, it would be preferable that suspended domestic competitions would restart with a different format in a manner which would still facilitate clubs to qualify on sporting merit."

The statement further notes that "insurmountable economic problems" and "existence of an official order prohibiting sports events" from the government would also allow the domestic campaigns to be ended.

The Championship, League One and League Two seasons have already been called off with league titles and relegations being handed out.

Earlier this week, the non-league game followed suit as the West Region juniors handed out their trophies.
