Motherwell must start to kill teams off and keep it tight - here's what we learned

Three games into the new campaign and Motherwell are struggling to hit the heights of last season, when third place earned them a Europa League qualifier spot.

On Wednesday evening they were twice pegged back by a hard-working Livingston side to take just a point at home, following 1-0 defeats to both Dundee United and Ross County in their opening two games.

That led to raging boss Stephen Robiinson suggesting his side were 'strolling in games' and looking for a move, saying he only gets seven players giving their all in each game.

The Northern Irishman is looking for a reaction when Motherwell travel through to play Hibs on Saturday, which will certainly make for an interesting encounter.

Here's what we learned from the 2-2 draw:

Motherwell need to score more goals

Motherwell started with Jordan White and Christopher Long up front, backed up by David Turnbull and Sherwin Seedorf.

Their goals - their only two strikes so far this term - were scored by midfielders David Turnbull and Allan Campbell.

That must be a wee bit frustrating for both Motherwell and their supporters, particularly since Jake Hastie hasn't quite hit the heights since coming back on loan from Rangers, while Tony Watt has only played a bit-part role so far.

They will certainly be looking to get off the mark in Edinburgh on Saturday as they face a Hibs side that has taken all nine points available to them so far.

The Steelmen need to be stronger in defence

Three games played and four goals conceded doesn't quite sound like crisis stations just yet, but when you put it beside the goals scored column, it is concerning.

Motherwell scored a good goal against Livingston only to be pegged back two minutes later through a penalty conceded by defender Ricki Lamie.

While it might have been a slightly harsh handball decision against the defender, it's errors like those that are going to cost Motherwell.

Livi's second goal was through a fairly simple run down the left and a runner making his way to the near post for a goal that really the defence should be doing better with.

Lamie is the only newcomer to that back line of Liam Grimshaw, Declan Gallagher and Bevis Mugabi, and while they are missing Richard Tait, it's by and large the same defence that did so well last season - so what is going wrong?

Jordan White really need a goal

Jordan White looks on in disbelief as his 'goal' against Dundee United is disallowed (Bill Murray/SNS Group)

They say a picture says a thousand words and the frustration in the face of Jordan White in the last two games has been palpable.

On Saturday against Dundee United he 'scored' but was penalised for a push, and against Livingston nothing seemed to work for him, though he forced a terrific save from Robby McRorie.

Strikers always say they're not bothered about not getting goals, it's a team game (etc, etc) but the longer it goes without a goal the more in preys on their mind, annoying both them and the gaffer.

White has shown quality, and he does seem to have the instinct to get into positions, so grabbing a goal might send him on a run... but getting that first one is going to be so important.
