Motherwell mistakes are 'debilitating', says Michael Stewart as he takes pop at keeper Chapman

Sportscene pundit Michael Stewart took aim at Motherwell goalkeeper Aaron Chapman after his display in the Lanarkshire derby defeat to Hamilton.

The 30-year-old, who is standing in for the injured Trevor Carson, didn't cover himself in glory in the 3-0 defeat to Accies yesterday, which was Keith Lasley first game in interim charge following Stephen Robinson's resignation.

Chapman was suspect at the first and second Accies goals, scored by Lee Hodson and Ross Callachan respectively, and got away with one at 1-0 when he flapped at a cross and Andy Winter missed the target.

Analysing the derby clash on last night's Sportscene, Stewart was critical of the shot-stopper's display as 'Well made it 10 games without a win, but he praised Accies for punishing their rivals.

He said: "There is no doubt Motherwell are low in confidence but moments like this [Chapman spilling a ball and Winter firing over the bar] certainly are not going to help.

"When you are in a position like that, you need to build from the back with a solid structure.

"The goalkeeper again [at the second goal], isn't good enough.

"These are mistakes that are absolutely debilitating.

"The fact that Motherwell were slack, their equally has to be credit to Hamilton for capitalising on that.

"You can allow a team to do all these things in a defensive sense, but if you don't convert that pressure into goals you will ultimately get punished.

"The good thing for Hamilton was the amount of bodies they were getting in the box.

"That's not something you've seen a great deal of and there was a definite change of momentum from Hamilton."

Meanwhile, fellow pundit Neil McCann, the former Rangers and Hearts winger, admitted he was shocked to see Stephen Robinson quit his post on Wednesday.

He said: "I think Stevie has done a good job.

"I'm surprised where they are this year because that's a right good squad.

"Clearly, they are making bad decisions, they are low on confidence, they are a wee bit clouded at times and maybe they need a change of voice, something to just spark them again because they have a group of players there that should be achieving better."
