Motherwell loan goalkeeper told to self-isolate after Coronavirus scare as Linfield player tests positive

Motherwell loanee Rohan Ferguson has been told to self-isolate after a Linfield teammate tested positive for coronavirus.

The Belfast outfit last night confirmed one of their players tested positive for COVID-19 and their upcoming fixture against Larne this Saturday has been axed due to the outbreak.

Former Airdrieonians goalkeeper Ferguson has spent the season on loan at the Northern Irish champions from the Steelmen.

The 22-year-old revealed that training has now been called off with the squad sent home for the next few days as they await more The Blues and health authorities.

The West Lothian native told Lanarkshire Live Sport : "Since the player has tested positive the club has been in contact with the public health agency and have gave the players information about how to deal with it, and what to expect.

"We have been told to look out for the symptoms, because they can take between five and ten days to get any of the symptoms.

"The suggestion of the club is that we stay in an self isolate just now. There is no game and no training to I am basically in my house just now.

"It's madness that something like this is happening. I had seen things on Twitter saying that it's only a bad flu but when you hear about what it really is it's much worse than that.

"The most important thing just now is the health of my teammate and the health of the everyone at the club."

He jokingly added: "All I've got in the house just now is Weetabix so I'll need to get some food in the house!"

The 22-year-old, who is out of contract at Fir Park in the summer,  is on course to win his first league title with the club currently top of the NIFL Premiership.

The Scots keeper said he was "a bit frustrated" with the fixture call-off but backed the decision to postpone their upcoming clash.

He said: "You want the games to be on when you are going well, but hopefully it's just a bit of a speed bump for the season.

"My objective is to go and win the league and as many games as possible here, but obviously not spreading the virus has to be the priority just now."

Linfield chairman Roy McGivern tweeted last night: "The priority now is to look after the welfare of our players and staff."

The club released a follow up statement today after their clash this weekend was called off, adding: "Officials from the NI Football League will continue to communicate regularly with clubs and review the ongoing situation alongside the response group set up by the Irish Football Association."
