Motherwell legend James McFadden 'not worried' for old club despite drop off in standards

James McFadden reckons Motherwell players have taken their eye off the ball in recent weeks, but doesn't fear for their Premiership status.

The Fir Park legend appeared on Sportscene  last night to pour over 'Well's heavy 4-1 defeat to Kilmarnock that leaves the Steelmen just seven points clear of the relegation zone going into the Premiership split.

A victory at Rugby Park would have put clear daylight between the club and the threat of the drop.

McFadden reckons Graham Alexander's squad have allowed their standards to dip in recent weeks, thinking it's job done for survival, but is confident they won't be pulled into a battle to stay up.

He said: "In general, Graham Alexander has had a real positive impact [since taking the job in January] but if Motherwell go and win [that game] they are not just about safe, they are definitely safe.

"I don't know if there is a drop off from the players that they maybe think they are safe as things are.

"Maybe there's been a drop off in the intensity. There probably will be.

"But I'm not worried. They will bounce back."

Fellow pundit Chris Iwelumo echoed those comments and said the players need to step up.

He said: "The manager can only take the players so far and motivate them.

"The players have got to take responsibility and not allow themselves to drop off."
