Motherwell lawyer unveils specially branded face masks as courts call for cover up

A lawyer has unveiled his own branded masks as all court users are now being asked to wear face coverings.

From Monday, lawyers and members of the public attending Hamilton Sheriff Court have to cover their face in public and communal areas of the building.

Masks can be removed in courtrooms.

Defence solicitor Diarmid Bruce stressed the need for “sensible precautions” as courts get busier again following the disruption caused by Covid-19.

Mr Bruce, managing director of Motherwell-based Bruce the Lawyers, said: “Criminal lawyers have been on the frontline during the crisis as they continued to meet clients in custody at court and in prison.

“At the height of the crisis most lawyers did video links with prisoners, trying to prevent unnecessary risks as best they could while attempting to safeguard the interests and rights of their clients.

“However, it is much better to meet a client face to face.

“The prisons are now stipulating that face masks are essential for all visitors.

“With courts opening up for more cases and clients returning for office appointments, sensible precautions like this are being taken.

“My firm’s offices are big enough to allow for social distancing, but if clients feel more comfortable with staff wearing masks that’s what will happen.”
