Motherwell haunted house vandalised on Halloween causing hundreds of pounds of damage

A mainstay of Motherwell's Halloween celebrations has been damaged by a group of youths.

Lanarkshire couple William and Roslyn Howson have been turning their family home into a haunted house for the last 16 years welcoming hundreds of horror lovers.

The pair, alongside their daughter, niece and grandkids, spent weeks preparing for the guisers.

However, after a successful night they found that some of the decorations had been vandalised.

William told Glasgow Live: "I'm a bit annoyed, there was no need for it, they were just stupid juveniles.

"They damaged about five rows of material which cost £80 in total, they damaged the gazebos and they cost a few hundred pounds.

"One of the props in the house got damaged as well and it cost £300 for that.

"The skeleton foot must have come from somebody else's display because it wasn't one of ours. In the video we saw him pushing it through and bursting a hole in the gazebo.

"We saw them put their heads and faces through so we know who they are. Plus the guy with the skeleton leg; we saw him make his way through the back door into the house and the bedroom where he left it."

Despite the upsetting scenes the family were met with at the end of the night, plans are already in place for next year's spooky month.

The Halloween lover is fully focused on making the event safer and deterring any more vandals.

The 67-year-old said: "We'll make some adjustments next year.

"We'll possibly have more cameras and we'll check then people out who are coming in. We won't let them in all at once.

"We'll keep them on the other side of the gate for a change."

Although many would have their spirits dampened by the vandals, William believes there were a lot of positives to take from the Halloween celebrations.

He said: "It was good, it was really good.

"We had a lot of positive comments on our own pages and other Halloween house pages.

"It was a good night."
