Motherwell flats evacuated after 'smell of gas' sparks emergency response

A block of flats in Motherwell were evacuated over reports of fumes coming from a house sparked an emergency response.

Police and fire crews raced to a property in Merry Street at around 10.53pm on Tuesday September 9 after reports of 'a smell of gas'.

Cop cars, four fire engines, and a specialist vehicle were sent out to the scene.

Ten people were evacuated from properties inside the building as a precaution as crews taped off the area.

An investigation has now been launched into the incident.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 10.53pm on Tuesday, September 9 to reports of a smell of gas from within a flat on Merry Street, Motherwell.

"Four fire appliances and a specialist vehicle were mobilised to the scene, where crews worked to make the area safe.

"A total of ten people were evacuated from properties within the flat building as a precaution."

A police spokesperson said: "We were called around 10.40pm on Tuesday, 8 September to a report of fumes in a house in Merry Street, Motherwell.

"SFRS attended and they would be lead for such incidents, although we did assist. 

"There were no arrests made during this incident."
