Motherwell fear Trevor Carson set for spell on sidelines after hobbling off in Ross County win

Motherwell goalkeeper Trevor Carson could be set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after hobbling off early in the win over Ross County.

The Northern Ireland international went down injured in the first half of their 4-0 victory, landing awkwardly after clearing the ball under pressure from Regan Charles-Cook.

Following some treatment, he was able to continue but Carson pulled up soon after and was replaced by debutant Aaron Chapman between the sticks.

Carson appears to have tweaked his knee and Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson admits his No.1 could be set for a spell on the sidelines, which would force him to scour for another shot-stopper, having allowed youngster PJ Morrison to go out on loan to Falkirk.

Asked what the prognosis was for Carson, Robinson said: "We don't know yet. He's going to have a scan later tonight or Monday morning.

"It doesn't look great for Trevor.

"We think it was his knee. I didn't actually see the incident, I just saw him head the ball away, so I didn't see what happened afterwards, but it's his knee.

"I'm just hoping it's not as bad as first feared.

"Credit to big Aaron, that was the reason we signed him instead of putting young PJ Morrsion in.

"We need PJ to play games, he's a very good goalkeeper and and he'll hopefully be a number one in the future.

"He's a very good young goalkeeper.

"But the decison to bring Aaron in was in case Trevor did go down.

"Now it's a case of if we need another one, depending on the outcome of Trevor.

"We are certainly not having to find problems in the back area at the moment for numerous reasons, but the performance today deserves so much credit for the fitness levels and the quality of play as well."

It would be a cruel blow for Carson, who has just returned to the side this season after being diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in November 2018.

He also just returned to the international setup and helped his country reach the play-off final for next year's European Championships.
