Motherwell defensive duo Declan Gallagher and Stephen O’Donnell are on the cusp of leading Scotland to their first major tournament in 22 years tomorrow night.
The Steelmen stars are likely to line-up for Steve Clarke’s men against Serbia in the Euro 2020 play-off final – and the hopes of the nation could rest on Gallagher and Wishaw lad O’Donnell keeping out the hosts in Belgrade.
History could be in the making as Scotland look to maintain their eight-game unbeaten run and book their place in next summer’s finals.
But Fir Park skipper Gallagher, who scored in Sunday’s 4-1 defeat to Celtic, won’t let the pressure get to him and insists he is ready to grasp the “once in a lifetime” opportunity.
He said: “There’s no point sitting back, being nervous and dwelling on it.
“It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity for some boys, so we have to give it our all.
“I can’t remember last week let alone 1998. I would have been seven years of age at that point.
"Listen, it’s something the whole nation is looking forward to.
“Everyone wants Scotland to reach a major tournament and we want to be the team that does it.
“We have to go to Serbia believing we can do it.
"It’s in our own hands and I feel confident about the game.
“We’ve been on a good run, that’s eight games unbeaten, so we have to go into this game with full confidence.”
