Motherwell defender relishes test against Kilmarnock's hotshot striker

Bevis Mugabi says he faces a major test of how far he has come this season when Motherwell travel to Kilmarnock tonight.

Mugabi is likely to be up against live-wire striker Nicke Kabamba, and the 25-year-old knows he will need to be on his toes.

The English striker has been on top form, netting Kilmarnock's winners against St Mirren and Hamilton in their last two games, and Mugabi hopes to keep him quiet.

Mugabi, who has been called up to the Uganda squad, said: "Nicke has been in good form for Kilmarnock. He's a good player, who is very strong and powerful, and he's a good finisher as well, so it's going to be a good test for me, personally, playing against him, but it's one that I'm looking forward to."

Mugabi says he has no problem travelling to Rugby Park this evening despite them having three positive coronavirus cases, and said that's just something players and managers will need to get used to.

He said: ""It's going to be the case for many teams, and it's just something we have to deal with as players and managers, cope with the players you've got and just into every game and prepare as normal, to be honest.

"We're just trying to prepare for the game on Friday night and focus on that.

"Against Rangers on Sunday I thought we sat back too much but that's in the past, and we need to kick on to Kilmarnock now.

"After a loss you'd expect a reaction and the gaffer needs a reaction, so that's what we're going to give him."

Mugabi has been pleased with his own personal progress, achieving goals he set for himself before the season, and says it has just been a case of knuckling down.

"I knew, coming to Motherwell last season, with the way they played, that I was going to need time to adjust and I'd need time to improve my game, and I feel like I've been doing that this season, with the coaching staff," he said.

"I've come into the team and kept my place, and I feel like I'm getting better and better with every game and all the training work I've been doing with the coaches has been paying off.

"I think quite a lot of people can see that and I can see it myself, so for me it has been very positive.

"I set myself personal goals before the start of the season and one of them was to be a consistent performer for the team, and to play as many games as possible.

"I just want to keep on playing as many games as possible, keep performing every week and try to keep my place in the team."
