Motherwell defender Declan Gallagher wasn't expecting to be made captain

Declan Gallagher says it's a great honour to be made Mothewell captan, and didn't expect to be given the nod.

The 29-year-old says he expected goalkeeper Trevor Carson or midfielder Allan Campbell to be given the armband.

However, former Livingston defender Gallagher says he's pleased to have been given more responsibility, and hopes to bring silverware to the club.

He told Motherwell's website: "I'm absolutely delighted with the news of getting the armband - it's something that is going to bring great pride to me and my family.

"I wasn't expecting it, I was thinking maybe Trevor Carson or Allan Campbell, so to be given it is massive.

"The gaffer just said to me 'I think you deserve it, with your performances last year', and told me he needs me to be more of a leader on the training pitch, because he knows I'm a bit of a joker at times.

"He said I've not to change the person that I am, but start being more of an example for young boys coming through, and that, with me getting caps, people should be looking up to me now.

"He's given me that bit more responsibility in the changing room and I'm very thankful for that.

"I had a great captain in Peter Hartley last season and learned a lot from him. It's good to pick things up because he was a great captain and hopefully I can do the same this season and can bring a lot of glory to Motherwell."
