Motherwell deal with Covid issue after 'missing' seven stars through virus as boss targets 'certain players'

Motherwell manager Graham Alexander insists he's happy with the Fir Park squad he has assembled - but Covid has reduced the number of men at his disposal.

Seven players and four staff members have tested positive for the virus as the Steelmen make their way through the Premiership's winter break.

They have already added Ross Tierney of Bohemian to their squad while Liam Shaw is expected to arrive on loan from Celtic.

Alexander says he is looking to make sure he has enough bodies to get through the period, but players must still be hungry for success. Motherwell are fourth in the league.

He told reporters: "We’re happy with the squad we have. We've also had the Covid issue. We had seven players missing and four members of staff in the last week.

"We've had to look at the squad and make sure we have sufficient numbers to see us through. We're looking for certain players who fit our profile and are motivated to come and play games."

Daily testing has come into force for Scottish clubs as they look to battle the virus. Motherwell are back in action on January 18th away to Ross County.

Alexander doesn't agree with the daily routine: “Personally I don’t think it is necessary, I think it was fine how it was before [with testing twice a week].

Graham Alexander says Motherwell and Livingston are both on good form ahead of Sunday's clash (SNS Group)

"If people have symptoms and such, then 100 per cent. But I think a lot of people have been taken out just by being in the same house as somebody.

"Every day we wake up and wait for those test results to come through and then we plan. It is quite a delicate situation.

"We are still trying to make out what the latest guidance means, still trying to get to the bottom of that because obviously people are at different stages of being vaccinated.

"It’s an on-going thing so you can’t say with any surety who is going to be here in two days’ time, or even tomorrow.”

Suggestions have even been made that Premiership football could head south of the border if the Scottish government don't lift their 500 fans capacity in time for the league's resumption.

Motherwell's boss added: "The grounds are there, but the whole travelling thing... we got told the crowds were 500 not just because of stadiums, but because people travel on trains and buses.

"We're not surely going to send thousands across the border to go to games? I think it's a really difficult and fluid situation for people to deal with. We are trying to keep as normal as possible, but it's not a normal world.

"I am glad I am not making decisions at that level, as football is difficult enough. Even though we are a different country to England, you can drive over the border every day. It's an impossible question to answer."
