Motherwell crash to defeat in pre-season test

Motherwell fell to a 1-0 defeat to Dumbarton at The Rock this afternoon in their first pre-season friendly of the summer.

The closed doors game saw a mix of trialists, including ex-Rangers midfielder Jamie Ness, and young prospects fielded as Graham Alexander gave game-time to 24 players.

While it was described as a useful exercise for the Steelmen, Dumbarton's David Hopkirk bagged the winner from close range with three minutes left.

Motherwell fielded two separate line-ups in each half, with striker Tony Watt taking the armband for the first period.

The former Celtic striker could have given Motherwell the lead early on, and young Corey O'Donnell did well to set up new striker Kaiyne Woolery, but the Dumbarton keeper did well to block.

Dumbarton threatened in the second half, with Scott Fox doing well to tip a header wide of goal, and while Motherwell had chances, the Sons then took the lead late on.

Connor Duthie did well to make his way into the box and his driven cross was steered into the net by Hopkirk.
