Motherwell councillor says fly tippers are putting children's safety at risk

Fly-tippers are putting children’s safety at risk by dumping dangerous rubbish in communal areas in Craigneuk.

Motherwell South East and Ravenscraig councillor Kenneth Duffy says he is dismayed at the situation in the Winning Quadrant area, where washing machines and fridges have been illegally abandoned in back greens and left on land near the flats.

Councillor Duffy said: “What makes it especially bad is that this is a residential area where children are playing. These are all items that need to be dumped safely.

“It is believed the fly-tipping is a result of tenants moving in and out of properties in the area.”

Councillor Duffy has written to the 28 separate landlords that hold properties within the area calling for action.

He also confirmed that discussions are progressing for CCTV in the area, which will allow North Lanarkshire Council to action tenants and landlords caught dumping with fines.

The Labour elected member added: “Private landlords in this area and elsewhere, who are more than happy to take rent, better realise quickly that they will be held to account for the mess left behind by past and present tenants.

“Craigneuk has a fantastic community council who work tirelessly for the area, together we have organised litter picks and mass clean ups, they shouldn’t be taking calls complaining of illegal dumping because of a selfish few.”
