Motherwell confirm false positive first-team Covid-19 test with star self-isolating as a 'precaution'

Motherwell have confirmed that a first-team star has tested positive for coronavirus this week.

However, the player has now returned two negative tests, following in the 'false positives' that put fellow Premiership St Mirren in the spotlight last month.

The player has no symptoms, and despite the follow-up tests proving to be negative, they will remain in self-isolation for seven days.

The Steelmen are due to play Dundee United today at Fir Park.

A club statement this morning read: "We can confirm that a first team player tested positive for Covid-19 earlier this week, as part of our regular testing procedures.

"However following two further tests – one through the NHS and another through our private testing facility – he has returned negative results.

"The player has not shown any symptoms at any point.

"Despite this ‘false positive’, the player will be in self-isolation for seven days as a precaution. He will be tested again prior to his return to training."

Aberdeen's clash with St Johnstone has been called off after two positive Covid-19 tests among Derek McInnes' squad forced a further six players into a fortnight's self-isolation.

The SPFL state that Hamilton Accies trip to Pittodrie next week will go ahead.
