Motherwell captain Declan Gallagher targeted as transfer race heats up

Aberdeen and Hearts are believed to be ready to make a move for Motherwell captain Declan Gallagher, who is out of contract in the summer.

The Dons have still to appoint a successor to Derek McInnes, but the Daily Record reports that he instigated interest in the Scotland international's services before leaving Pittodrie earlier this month.

Cardiff City, Hearts and Dundee United are also said to be interested in the Blantyre-born defender, who is free to talk to any clubs, due to his contract situation.

Both Aberdeen and Hearts might hold the aces in any potential move, as Gallagher may be keen to remain in Scotland as he is a regular under Steve Clarke.

Gallagher helped Scotland qualify for the Euros and is almost certainly going to be in Clarke's squad at the tournament.
