Motherwell boxer seals second pro win and weds partner in one weekend

Motherwell boxer Reece McFadden enjoyed a whirlwind weekend– sealing a second professional win and celebrating his wedding in the space of just 24 hours.

Two-time Commonwealth Games medallist McFadden, 23, wedded his long-term partner Sammy at 2.30pm on Saturday.

But he had the small issue of being a major part of MTK Global’s fight night at Glasgow’s Emirates Arena the night before.

Thankfully Reece managed to overcome his opponent Stefan Sashev with a fourth round stoppage without sustaining too much damage himself.

Reece cut Sashev above the right eye in the second round, had him down in the third, and eventually halted him in the fourth and final round.

Speaking after the fight, Reece told British Boxing News: “The opponent was a bit awkward with his head.

“It seemed like he didn’t want to be in there as soon as he felt my power and my body shots because it was clearly bothering him a lot.

“I’ve got a cut but I thought it was a lot worse than it was, so I can’t complain.”

While there is a light side to this weekend’s events, Reece is keen to keep his career on the right track.

He said: “Once I’m back from enjoying my marriage I want to get fast-tracked to British and Commonwealth titles.”

It was a big night for the Motherwell boxing scene on Friday at the Emirates, with Jerviston puncher Iain Butcher also in action against Irishman Carl McDonald.

The visitor turned up to spoil the party by flooring Butcher in the opening round.

Butcher, a former WBO European flyweight champion, managed to rally back to win 58-56 on points.

He added: “It was an entertaining fight.”
