Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson urges his side to take more responsibility

Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson has told his side to take more responsibility and cut out mistakes as they try to climb the Premiership table.

And he's looking for his side to get back to a level of consistency as they head into Saturday's Premiership clash against St Mirren at Fir Park.

Saints are bottom of the pile, while Motherwell are up in fifth, but looking to bounce back from back-to-back defeats against Hibs and St Johnstone.

Robinson said: "It's a team of boys that are very quiet, so sometimes it's like a silent movie out there.

"Unfortunately I have to do the shouting out there, I'd love not to; we're trying to get people to speak and take more responsibility themselves.

"When you lose players like Jake Carroll, Trevor Carson and Liam Donnelly, the men in your team - and you've already lost guys like Peter Hartley, Richard Tait and Mark Gillespie, boys with experience and know-how - we're a very quiet team.

"We need a wee bit more devilment and sometimes that has to come from me, if it means encouraging and shouting and getting people into the right areas of the pitch, but we're trying to get the boys to do that themselves as well."

Robinson expects a tough game against Jim Goodwin's men, and says there's not a lot between teams in the Premiership.

"We're looking to win tomorrow," he said. "It will be a tough game and they're eight unbeaten now at St Mirren, but I was pleased with lots of aspects last week.

"I'm the first person to give the players a jolt if they need it, but up until the 88th minute it was 1-0, we had a perfectly good goal disallowed - which I'm sure everyone will agree - and in nearly 89.9 per cent of games when you go 1-0 up you don't lose the game in the Premiership - that's factual, that's not me making that up, and it changes the whole dynamic of the game.

"Things didn't go our way, in terms of decisions, but there was a lot of good play, a lot of good stuff. We have to take that good play and control the bits that we didn't do as well.

"We were a little cavalier on our defending for the last two goals so we need to tidy up on that, but continue doing what we're doing, I've total belief in what we're doing."

Robinson added: "We can start to look up and catch people above us as well and there are people around us who have tough games at the weekend, so we see this as a really good opportunity to do the things that we did on Saturday better, believe in what we're doing and tidy up those silly mistakes.

"I've said to the players we're a nice team, we're nice boys, but we need a little bit more devilment, we need a little bit more of people taking responsibility, certainly vocally, demanding, and that's whether we're 1-0 up or 1-0 down.

"We're a great team when we're 1-0 and 2-0 up, but we need to find a little bit more, a little bit of character, and that comes with games, winning and confidence and we need to start doing that again on Saturday.

Robinson hopes Devante Cole will return to action (Roddy Scott/SNS Group)

"We're similar sizes of clubs with similar squads, and they're eight unbeaten now, they've continued through the Betfred Cup, so they have a wee bit of continuity and have got into a groove.

"We've been stop-start, and we're looking for that consistency, so we're expecting a tough game, no doubt.

"We know all their players, their threats, their weaknesses, I'm sure they'll be the same with us.

"There's nothing between the teams in this division, from the bottom of the table right up to third place there isn't an awful lot between teams, it's about who turns up on the day.

"You need a wee bit of a rub of the green sometimes, which we maybe didn't have last week, but we will be looking for the same level of performance.

"If you take out some of the mistakes and maybe demand just a wee bit more from each other, and I go into the game with confidence."

Motherwell hope to welcome striker Devante Cole back into tomorrow's squad, but Jordan White is out.

Young goalkeeper Matty Connelly has an injured shoulder, but Trevor Carson has resumed light training and Jake Carroll continues his rehab, though Robinson says he is "still a good few weeks away".
